HAYGOODS RAISE FUNDS TO HELP WITH TORNADO!

Family raising tornado funds

Posted: Tuesday, March 6, 2012 7:23 pm | Updated: 7:28 pm, Tue Mar 6, 2012.

Just days after an EF2 tornado devastated parts of Branson’s iconic 76 Country Boulevard, one of the city’s performing families was looking to raise funds for the relief effort in the best way they know how: through song.

“We Hang On,” an original song written by Timothy and Dominic Haygood and performed by the Haygoods, is now available on iTunes, with 100 percent of its proceeds going toward the Branson tornado recovery fund established by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

In a fortuitous turn of events, the song had already been written and recorded — though not released — before the twister hit early Wednesday, Feb. 29.

“(The song) just took on a different meaning after everything had happened,” Timothy Haygood said. “It is about our experiences overcoming adversity and is perfect for what’s happening right now, so it’s our way of helping a small bit.”

The Haygoods themselves were among the hundreds of residents and business owners impacted by the storm. The venue in which they perform — RFD-TV: The Theatre — was unscathed, but The New Americana Theatre — which they own and operate — sustained significant damage to the roof and several walls.

Of course, the story could have been much worse.

The family’s tech and video editor, David Newton, was driving on 76 when the tornado touched down, lifted his car off the street and eventually threw it into some other vehicles. A news release said Newton “figured he was going to die and had accepted his fate,” only to survive the ordeal.

The song “We Hang On” features Dominic Haygood on lead vocals and touches on the siblings’ experience growing up in a mobile home park and “never really caring what anyone thought,” according to Timothy Haygood. A major theme is persevering through “the hard times.”

A music video of the family performing the song can be seen on YouTube.

HAYGOODS UPGRADE EFFECTS IN SHOW!

BRANSON DAILY NEWS EXCERPT

Haygoods upgrade effects

Posted: Tuesday, March 6, 2012 7:26 pm

The Haygoods’ move to RFD-TV: The Theatre this season has allowed them to add new effects and production value to their show that was not previously possible, according to oldest brother Timothy Haygood.

“For sure, the sound system is superior to what we had at the Americana (Theatre),” Haygood said early last week. “We can get away with a lot of new stuff at RFD-TV because the sound is so balanced there. We’ve just let our imaginations run wild.”

Their imaginations have also been playing with some new effects that the RFD theater’s larger stage and auditorium make possible. For example, the family has installed a new laser system Haygood estimated to be 12 times more powerful than the technology they used at the Americana.

Guitarist Michael Haygood, a tinkerer by nature, has also been experimenting with new technology the performing family plans to show off this season.

“Michael’s been working on some new stuff for a year that’s never been done before, because he invented it,” Timothy Haygood said.

While he didn’t want to reveal all the surprises, one segment includes Michael Haygood playing an electric guitar atop a piano that spurts fire and smoke.

Timothy Haygood said huge productions are just part of what modern audiences have come to expect, but it also helps bridge the gap between older and younger viewers.

“People are just wowed,” he said. “It really helps us bridge that gap between the older folks who come to see us and the younger folks who maybe weren’t expecting to see a production on this level in a Branson show.”

In addition to Timothy and Michael, the show stars brothers Patrick, Dominic, Matthew and Aaron and sister Catherine. Mom and Dad — also known as Jim and Marie Haygood — are also involved.

“Our whole thing is a family-run business,” Timothy Haygood said. “Everyone has their own things that they do, and we all work together. I don’t think we would be able to make it work unless every family member was putting in the extra time.”

According to Timothy Haygood, that’s part of what makes Branson shows unique.

“I don’t know what people are talking about when they say, ‘What’s Branson going to do? We don’t have the big stars coming here anymore,’” he said. “Here, you can see the best entertainment put on by families who care about the product they’re putting in front of people. It’s the only place in the world that’s like that.”

The RFD theater was not damaged in last week’s tornado and will present its regular shows as scheduled.

BRANSON TORNADOPOCALYPSE 2012!!!

Oh my gosh. This has been an amazing, terrifying, heartbreaking and heartwarming past couple of days. The outpouring of support has been amazing.

FIRST, PLEASE KNOW THAT RFDTV THEATRE WAS NOT AFFECTED SO HAYGOODS ARE PLAYING EVERY SHOW ON THE SCHEDULE!! BRANSON IS BACK UP AND OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!

At around 1:25 AM, an EF2 Tornado touched down in Branson and did widespread damage to many businesses, hotels and attractions on the 76 strip. Michael, Catherine, and Matthew live 1/4 mile from The Americana Theatre, which we still operate even though we have moved to RFDTV theatre. Michael said he knew something was very wrong when the sirens went off non stop for a few minutes prior to the touchdown. After the tornado had passed, Michael and the rest of his housemates rushed to the theatre. The strip looked like a warzone but they made it to the Americana Theatre to find huge holes in the walls and roof and rain pouring in over the whole auditorium. Our backup generator had kicked on, even though a rogue flying AC unit had rammed it, and wires were sparking everywhere. SInce there was no power anywhere on the strip the Americana sign was still on and undamaged, proudly announcing the shows soon to be open there! The Americana sign was the only thing on anywhere on the whole strip due to the generator. Michael quickly turned off the generator and everyone started trying to cover all the equipment which was mostly destroyed, unfortunately. Patrick, Timothy and Mom Haygood pulled up minutes later and started helping as well.

Michael was very scared something had happened to our Tech and Video Editor David Newton, because his car was in the back parking lot totaled, but he was nowhere to be found. It turned out David was huddled in the basement studio behind the theatre, (which was also destroyed), with his girlfriend and buddy after limping his car to the theatre. David was driving on the strip as it happened. His car was lifted into the air, spun around and thrown into other cars, also flying around. He is VERY lucky to have survived and we thank God he was okay. David said he figured he was going to die and had accepted his fate as he was flying around… Wow….

After a few minutes a whole lot more help had arrived, but nothing could be really done until the next morning. Michael and a few buddies slept in the Americana lobby with the company of Smith and Wesson, (there were reports of looters), and woke up the next morning to witness an extraordinary sight. Branson had been HIT. Certain parts of Branson were nailed but many parts were ok.

We have spent the last few days helping employees who cannot work due to the Americana damage, and helping the shows that can’t play as well. All of these shows are canceled until we can get the theatre repaired.

3 Redneck Tenors, Todd Oliver and Friends, Joseph Hall Elvis Rock N Remember, and Cassandre Haygood and Friends. Over 60 people are out of work until we can fix the theatre. Dad Haygood is working like a madman to get everything fixed so we can get back up and running.

Our song “WE HANG ON” is dedicated to Branson Tornado Recovery and all proceeds will be donated… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FHWgp1zbo4
